Bike Tips:

With Spring and nice weather now here or arriving soon, be sure your bike is ready for top performance and reliability. One of the things that are overlooked by many is your brake and clutch hydraulic fluids which most street bikes now come with. Before removing the reservoir cap, cover any exposed bike parts (i.e. fairing, dashes, etc.) from any possible spillage of brake fluid. If brake fluid gets on anything, remove it immediately as it may remove paint or "melt" plastic parts very quickly.

Tip number one is your fluid level. If your fluid level shows low in any of your brake reservoirs, that is a good indication that your brake pads may be in need of replacement. When new brake pads are in place, they naturally have the brake pistons recessed the farthest back into the caliper. As brake pads wear, the pistons are pushed by the brake fluid out to take up the slack from the wearing pads. So if your fluid is low, that would be the indication that your brake pads may need to be replaced. Check your pads first to see if they need replacing.

Tip number two pertains to the color of your brake fluid. This applies to users of DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid and not to DOT 5 users. Fresh DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid is fairly clear with maybe just a hint of amber color. As the brake fluid ages, it takes on or blends with the moisture in the air which turns it darker in color. The more moisture in the fluid, the darker amber or eventually root beer color it will become. Moisture in the brake or clutch fluid will decrease the effectiveness of it's performance, and can eventually lead to rusted brake components, gelled fluid in the reservoir(s), or even severely hampered or total failure of the brake or clutch actions. To guard against these problems, it is strongly suggested to check your fluid levels and color (DOT 3 or 4) at least every two years. In high humidity environments, check at least once a year. If you find your brake or clutch fluids contaminated with water and are darker in color, first remove the fluid from the reservoir (make sure you don't press or pull on any levers or pedals to pump air into the system after removing the fluid. Check to make sure there are no dirt, gelled fluid or other contaminates in the reservoir. When your satisfied the reservoir is clean, fill to proper level with a fresh previously unopened bottle of brake fluid. DOT 4 has a higher boiling point than DOT 3 and is recommended for most if not all motorcycles. Now flush the system until fresh, clear, fluid comes out of the brake or clutch bleeding valve by gently depressing the lever or pedal to accomplish this. When fresh fluid is evident and no air bubbles are seen (if air may have been present) in the exiting fluid, tighten up the bleed valve, add fluid to the reservoir to replace that which you used in bleeding (if needed) and replace the reservoir cap. Your ready to ride! Note: If your bike calls for using either DOT 3 or 4 fluid, DO NOT attempt to use DOT 5 (silicone based fluid), as this may interact with your system parts and could cause failure.

Computer Tip:

Since you're probably viewing this on a computer, we thought we would pass along some tips that might make life a little easier for you. When using many programs and even some internet browsers (such as Firefox), and you notice a thin squiggly red line under a word, this is telling you that the particular word may have been spelled incorrectly or possibly even a grammatical error. To help you find the correct spelling or usage of that or other words you notice this line under, simply right click (click the right hand button on your computer mouse) while on that word, and a list of alternate spelling and other options will appear. Then simply select the proper spelling or usage of that word or words by using the left mouse button, and that word or words will be replaced by the correct ones. If you are sure the spelling is correct, and the computer still shows it may be incorrect, it is probably a word or words not found on the computers dictionary. In that case, you can left click on the word "add" and the computer will add that special word to it's dictionary, and will not tag it as misspelled the next time.
